Tell us what the door is doing. We'll call you back.
Reason #1: The Remote Battery Is Dead
⏱ Fix time: 2 minutes | DIY: Yes
This is the most common reason DFW homeowners call us — and it's the easiest fix. If your wall button still works but the remote doesn't, the battery is almost certainly dead.
What to do: Replace the battery (usually a CR2032 or AA). If that fixes it, great. If the wall button also doesn't work, move to reason #2.
Reason #2: The Opener Has No Power
⏱ Fix time: 5 minutes | DIY: Yes
If nothing lights up on your opener and neither the remote nor wall button works, it has lost power. This happens frequently in DFW after power surges and storms.
What to do: Check if the opener is plugged in. Check the circuit breaker — the outlet may have tripped. Try plugging something else into the same outlet to verify it has power. If power is confirmed but opener still won't respond, the logic board may be fried — call us.

Reason #3: The Torsion Spring Is Broken
⏱ Fix time: Professional only | DIY: Absolutely NOT
This is the #1 emergency repair in Dallas-Fort Worth. You'll often hear a loud bang when it snaps — like a gunshot from the garage. The opener motor may hum and strain but the door won't budge because the spring does all the actual lifting.
How to identify it: Look above the door. There should be a coiled spring mounted on a horizontal bar. If you see a gap in the coils, or the spring appears separated, it's broken.
Fast Mobile Garage Doors carries torsion springs in all sizes on every truck — we're in Irving, Plano, Carrollton, and all DFW cities within 1–2 hours.
Reason #4: The Safety Sensors Are Misaligned
⏱ Fix time: 5–10 minutes | DIY: Often yes
Every garage door opener made after 1993 has two small sensors near the floor on each side of the door. They shoot an invisible beam across the door opening. If that beam is blocked or the sensors are knocked out of alignment, the door won't close — and sometimes won't open.
Signs of misaligned sensors: The LED light on one or both sensors is blinking or off (it should be solid). The door reverses immediately when you try to close it. Something may be blocking the beam — a broom, a box, debris.
What to do: Clear any objects near the sensors. Gently loosen the wing nut on the misaligned sensor, point it directly at the opposite sensor until the LED goes solid, and re-tighten. If this doesn't work, call us — sometimes sensors fail electronically and need replacement.
Reason #5: The Door Is Manually Locked
⏱ Fix time: 30 seconds | DIY: Yes
Many garage doors have a manual lock — a horizontal bar that slides across to lock the door from inside. If someone engaged it (or a small child played with it), your opener will strain but the door will refuse to move.
What to do: Look at the door panels for a handle or sliding bar lock. If it's engaged, slide it to the unlocked position. Done.
Reason #6: The Disconnect Cord Was Pulled
⏱ Fix time: 2 minutes | DIY: Yes
Every garage door opener has a red emergency disconnect cord hanging from the trolley on the track. It's designed to let you open the door manually during a power outage. If this cord was accidentally pulled, the door is now disconnected from the opener.
What to do: To reconnect, simply pull the cord toward the door (not straight down) until you hear a click, or manually move the door to the closed position and the trolley will re-engage automatically on the next opener cycle.
Reason #7: The Track Is Bent or Blocked
⏱ Fix time: Professional recommended | DIY: Partial
Garage door tracks run vertically on each side and curve into horizontal sections at the top. If a track gets bent, dented, or has debris stuck in it, the door will jam mid-travel or refuse to move at all.
What to do: Inspect the tracks visually. If you see obvious debris (a rock, a screw, hardened grease), carefully remove it. A slightly bent track can sometimes be tapped back into shape with a rubber mallet. Severely bent tracks need professional replacement — forcing a door on a damaged track can cause much bigger damage.
Reason #8: The Cables Have Snapped
⏱ Fix time: Professional only | DIY: No
Lift cables run along the sides of your door and connect the spring system to the door itself. When a cable snaps, the door becomes unbalanced and may slam down on one side, or simply refuse to open. You may see the cable coiled on the floor near the door.
What to do: Do not try to operate the door. A door with a broken cable can fall suddenly and cause injury or serious damage. Call us — cable replacement is a quick repair when done by a professional.
Reason #9: The Opener Motor Has Burned Out
⏱ Fix time: Professional | DIY: No
Most garage door opener motors last 10–15 years. In DFW's extreme heat, they sometimes burn out sooner — especially if they've been overworked by a heavy or unbalanced door. Signs include the opener making a clicking or buzzing sound, running briefly, or not responding at all despite having power.
What to do: This typically means a new opener is needed. We install all major brands same-day and can recommend the right model for your door size and usage frequency.
Reason #10: The Limit Settings Are Off
⏱ Fix time: 15 minutes | DIY: Possible
Garage door openers have "limit" settings that tell the motor when to stop — when the door is fully open and when it's fully closed. If these settings get knocked off (which can happen after a power surge or if someone adjusted them accidentally), the door may stop halfway or reverse immediately.
What to do: Check your opener manual for how to adjust the limit settings on your specific model. On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, there are adjustment screws on the side of the opener unit. If this feels too technical, call us — it's a quick adjustment.
FAQ — Garage Door Won't Open in DFW
This usually means the spring is weak or broken, or the opener's force settings are too low. If the spring is the issue, you'll need a professional. If the force settings, check your opener manual for adjustment instructions.
It's very risky. Without the spring, the door can weigh 150–300 lbs. If you must get your car out, use extreme caution, have someone help hold the door, and don't leave it open unsupported. Call for repair immediately — this is a same-day emergency situation.
Cold temperatures make metal contract, including springs and cables. Lubricants also thicken in cold. In DFW winters, this is common. Apply a garage door lubricant to springs, rollers, and hinges in November to prevent winter issues. If the problem persists, your springs may be worn out.
